  1. I am reading a book specifically not made into a movie – Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff and the first thing you learn in the book is that Cleopatra didn’t look anything like Elizabeth Taylor

    • So – to reply to my own comment – I finished reading Cleopatra and thought it was an interesting book although not perhaps one I would pick up for fun reading – maybe what I would describe as speculative biography. Not a lot of hard data, lots of other people who have given their opinions and another author culling through those opinions and telling us which ones she thinks are most likely. (reminded me a bit of Will in the World by Stephen Greenblatt which does much the same thing with Shakespeare but which seemed a bit more readable to me) However, I did think I should look at the other side so last night I settled down with popcorn and the 4 hours Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor movie Cleopatra. Not sure that was worth 4 hours that I’ll never get back but kind of fun to look at all the excess.

  2. and how about mentioning a book that would make an excellent movie – Ben Fountain’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk just won the National book Critics Circle Award for fiction and was a finalist for the National Book Award.
